Sulforaphane, Glutathione, and Microplastics: What Can Actually Help Your Body Clear Plastic Chemicals

The honest headline first: no supplement "purges microplastics" from your body, and any product that says so is overselling. There is no human evidence that sulforaphane, glutathione, or anything else flushes out plastic particles. What the science does support is narrower and still worth knowing: sulforaphane switches on the body's own detox machinery — the glutathione system — which helps clear the chemicals that ride along with plastics, like BPA and phthalates. If you have seen the "broccoli sprouts detox microplastics" claims going around, this is the grounded version.

The distinction that matters

"Microplastics" and "plastic chemicals" are not the same problem.

  • Microplastic particles are physical fragments. There is currently no proven way to make the body excrete them faster with a supplement.
  • Plastic-associated chemicals — bisphenols (BPA, BPS) and phthalates — are the endocrine-disrupting compounds that leach out of plastics. These are metabolized and excreted through your liver's detox pathways, and that is where the real, testable science lives.

Any article promising to "detox microplastics" is almost always talking about the second thing while implying the first. We are not going to do that.

How sulforaphane actually works

Sulforaphane is a compound concentrated in broccoli sprouts (far more than in mature broccoli). It activates a cellular switch called Nrf2, which turns up Phase II detoxification enzymes — including glutathione S-transferases. Glutathione is the body's central antioxidant and detox molecule; these enzymes attach it to reactive compounds, making them water-soluble so you can excrete them in urine. That mechanism is well established in the toxicology literature.

The strongest human evidence

The best clinical evidence comes from Johns Hopkins–led randomized trials in Qidong, China, where researchers gave people a broccoli-sprout beverage and measured what came out in their urine:

  • In a 12-week randomized trial of 291 participants, the beverage produced rapid, sustained increases in excretion of glutathione-derived conjugates of benzene (up 61%) and acrolein (up 23%).
  • A dose-response follow-up trial confirmed the effect on benzene detoxification and showed it scaled with dose.
  • A bioavailability trial found the body absorbs far more sulforaphane from a sulforaphane-rich preparation (~70%) than from a glucoraphanin-rich one (~5%) — which matters when you choose a supplement.

Note what these trials measured: airborne pollutants (benzene, acrolein), not microplastics. They are strong evidence that sulforaphane revs up the glutathione excretion pathway in real humans. Applying that to BPA and phthalates is a reasonable inference — those chemicals travel the same route — but it is inference, supported mostly by animal and lab data, not a finished human microplastics trial.

Where glutathione fits

Sulforaphane works partly by supporting your glutathione system, so people ask whether they should just take glutathione directly. Oral glutathione has bioavailability limits, and the human evidence for supplementing it to clear plastic chemicals specifically is thin. The mechanistically cleaner move is supporting your body's own glutathione production — which is what sulforaphane and precursors like NAC are aimed at — rather than assuming a glutathione pill clears plastics. Treat direct-glutathione "microplastic" claims with the same skepticism as the rest.

The practical, non-hyped takeaway

If your real goal is reducing your plastic-chemical burden, the highest-value moves are not supplements at all:

  1. Reduce the source — don't microwave food in plastic or store hot food in plastic, cut down on canned/plastic-packaged food, filter drinking water.
  2. Support your detox pathways — eat a diet with cruciferous vegetables (broccoli sprouts most of all), adequate protein, and fiber.
  3. Then, optionally, supplement sulforaphane if you want a concentrated, research-backed way to activate the Nrf2/glutathione pathway.

Supplements are the last 10%, not the fix.

Bottom line

Nothing here purges plastic out of you. But sulforaphane has real human evidence for firing up the glutathione detox pathway that clears plastic-associated chemicals, source reduction does more than any pill, and if you supplement, buy third-party-tested. That is the whole honest story — anyone selling more than that is selling.
